Artic Air Mass Arrives

January 17, 2025

An arctic air mass arrives late tonight through tomorrow behind a strong cold front. Temperatures will steadily fall through the weekend, with overnight wind chills on Saturday in the low teens. Be sure to prepare now ahead of the cold so you can be ready!

Please continue to monitor the weather forecast and take the appropriate precautions to ensure their safety during this time. Since severe weather or other emergencies may cause telephone and electrical outages, keep a battery-operated radio tuned to station WBAP 820 AM or KSCS 96.3 FM. This station will keep you informed every half hour of road conditions and business closures.

Now is an important time to prepare your car for safe travel in winter weather, as the safety of our clients and employees is our top priority. If the highway patrol determines that conditions are too hazardous for safe travel, we will close the office; however, our phone lines will remain open 24 hours a day for non-emergency situations. Please prepare yourself and your clients in case of any service interruptions due to inclement weather, and keep the agency informed of any such interruptions.

Preparation Includes the Following:

  1. Monitor the news for the changing weather.
  2. Make sure you have non-perishable food and water. You should have one gallon of water per day.
  3. Ensure your home is insulated and wrap exposed pipes to prevent freezing and bursts.
  4. Make sure to keep your phone charged, your eyeglasses with you, and a flashlight in case the power goes out.
  5. If you have a car the gas tank should be full and you should have an emergency kit in your car which has batteries, a battery powered radio, first aid supplies, blankets, jumper cables, non-perishable food,  (shovel and ice scraper if needed) and essential medications.
  6. Dress in layers of warm clothing when needed, hat, gloves, and scarf.
  7. Pets should have access to warm shelter and plenty of food and water.
  8. Limit outdoor activities to essential needs.
  9. Never heat a home with a cooktop or oven, charcoal grill or gasoline or propane heater indoors as these items cause electric shock and or cause deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.  Also, keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything flammable, keep children at least 3 feet away from space heaters, turn space heaters off when you go to bed or leave the room.  Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets.
